JOIN US IN THE WALK TO THE STONE ON SUNDAY, MAY 31st 2015

MARK YOUR CALENDERS NOW FOR SUNDAY, MAY 31st , BETWEEN ABOUT NOON AND 2PM TO COME OUT AND SUPPORT OUR MONTREAL IRISH MONUMENT PARK FOUNDATION PROJECT !!!

As many of you know, on the last Sunday in May, the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) organizes a “Walk to the Stone” to honour and remember the more than 6000 immigrants that died and were buried around the Black Rock in 1847. And, this year, the AOH has graciously agreed to allow us to tag alone in support of building a beautiful green Cultural Park in the area. The Walk is scheduled for Sunday, May 31st 2015.

Depending on the weather, this Walk normally attracts about 100+ people but our objective this year will be to get out at least 1000 people walking in support of the project. It is, of course a big number, and will require some organization. But you can certainly help by asking your friends; family; or organized group to join this year.

It generally starts at about 12:30pm (after an 11am Mass) from St. Gabriel’s Church on Centre St. in the Point; and takes about 20 or 30 minutes to reach the Rock. (There is also a bus for individuals that may have a mobility problem in walking this distance.)

The AOH arranges for a City Permit; and a Police escort for this Walk; and closer to the date, we will likely have to provide the authorities with a rough number of expected participants. So please leave a note on our FB web site (https://www.facebook.com/groups/Blackrockmemorial/ ) if you are planning to join this very positive effort with the approximate number of people that might walk with you.

Over the next weeks until the event, we will likely drive you crazy with reminders and updated information about this event, since it will be a terrific opportunity to demonstrate support of the Park effort, especially if we can attract some media attention.

One of the few things that we can almost guarantee is that the weather on May 31st will likely be warmer than it was for our group at the recent St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

So, please share this information; and start asking your contacts now if they would be willing to walk and support this very positive effort. Of course, since we intend to make this overall project as inclusive as possible, and a great project for The City of Montreal, one does not have to be of Irish descent to join us !!

Hope to see you all there on  May 31st….
