Mayor of Montreal Supports our Project
BREAKING NEWS! OUR MAYOR FULLY SUPPORTS OUR PROJECT; PROMISES “TO DO EVERYTHING HE CAN TO MAKE IT HAPPEN”; AND AGREES TO BE OUR “CHAMPION” !!!
Yesterday, Monday, May 11th, a few of us were invited to meet directly with our Mayor of Montreal – Mr. Denis Coderre, about the project.
He listened very closely as we outlined the history of the site; our vision for the Cultural Green Space including the GAA field etc. (Of course, thanks to your many e-mails to him, Mr. Coderre was somewhat aware of the effort). Our Mayor clearly understood the importance of the cultural and historical value of the site - not only for the Irish but for all Montrealers and our desire to make this project as inclusive as possible. He asked only a few, but excellent questions - that really indicated his understanding of what we were trying to do.
Mr. Coderre promised that he would do everything possible to “make it happen” and to be our “Political Champion”. We detected no B.S. whatsoever, but rather that our Mayor was very sincere in his support and definitely a man of action.
I can’t tell you how pleased we were with our reception; and with the Mayor’s comments.
Of course there are still areas that have to be determined like the actual land ownership in the area, the proper cost for the project, financing; the involvement of the Provincial and Federal Governments etc. etc. But as Mr. Coderre said we will cross all these bridges as we come to them. There might even be the possibility of including our project in the 375th Montreal Anniversary activities for 2017.
(The only thing that I had to promise was that, on occasion, I seem to have spelled his name in some notes with an extra “r” as in Corderre – and in return for his support, I said that I will try to never again misspell his name!)
It was a terrific meeting and we all thank the Mayor for taking the time.
