Saint Colomban - Irish Heritage Day - August 29th
The very 1st Irish Heritage Day at Saint-Colomban is just about a month away
(Saturday, August 29th 2015).
Everyone is welcome and we hope you can join us. In the meantime, here is an updated program (in French). As well as the new update brochure in both English and French.
The connection to the Irish Community in Montreal is that after first settling in St. Colomban in the early 1800’s, which for the next 100 years, or so, was an almost 100% Irish Community - a number of these settlers then moved back to Montreal in the early 1900’s for work etc., and often, like my own grandparents, then settled in Griffintown. But a few of them also moved back to the Point as well.
Remember – you do not have to be a descendant of Saint Colomban or even Irish to come out to this family fun event that is only about a 45 minute car ride from Montreal.

MARK YOU CALENDARS FOR SATURDAY, AUGUST 29th 2015
IRISH HERITAGE DAY AT SAINT-COLOMBAN
Saint-Colomban (originally spelled as St. Columban) is a small community near Mirabel Airport about 45 minutes by car from Montreal.
The quick history is that this community was founded by Irish settlers in the early 1800’s and for the next 80-100 years was an almost 100% Irish settlement. In the early 1900’s many of these residents started to move back to Montreal for jobs etc. and generally lived in Griffintown and/or The Point. Many Montrealers with Irish heritage have a strong connection to Saint-Colomban and don’t realize it. A great deal more information can be found on our web page at www.stcolumban-irish.com
Today, although the town is generally French speaking, they have a fierce pride in their original Irish settlers and so the Mayor and council have decided to have their 1st ever “Irish Heritage Day of Saint Colomban” on Saturday, August 29th.
This fun filled family day will include lots of Irish music & dancing; Dr. Ray Bassett, the Irish Ambassador to Canada, has indicated that he will attend; the GAA will be demonstrating the Irish sports – football & hurling; an historical plaque in the old Irish cemetery will be unveiled; there will be information about the strong Irish of Saint Colomban support of the Patriots in the Rebellion of 1837 and a whole range of other activities. (We will update you as more information becomes available).
So EVERYONE IS WELCOME to attend. You don’t have to be an Irish descendant – you don’t even have to have any Irish heritage to join in the fun.
We do have an event page on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/events/1022758927743416/ where you can note your attendance.
